Earth Day 2012

The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. Many people consider this day to have been the launching point of the current environmental movement. Earth is our home and we need to care for it and protect it just like we take care of our body and our home. Visit earthday.org and get involved.

It’s hard to make a lot of big changes in our lives but little changes can reap huge rewards.
Buy paper towels that are made from recycled paper
Use a reusable water bottle, coffee mug and lunch container
Switch one dinner a week to a vegetarian meal
Turn off electronic devices when they are not in use
Turn off your car engine when you run into the store, house or school, etc.
Let the kids skip bath night once in a while – they will love it!

The Lorax is quite possibly the most unfamiliar and underrated of all of the Dr. Seuss books. Hopefully the release of the new movie will bring some attention to the classic environmental tale that only Dr. Seuss can tell. After reading this book, everyone from the youngest to the oldest can envision a world without trees. Woven into the story is the often missed lesson that the environment is all connected. We do need to care when a species is endangered or becomes extinct. How it affects us? We can’t always know for sure and sometimes when we do, it’s too late.
