Read Across America 2013
Feb 24th, 2013 | By Wendy | Category: Family Time, Featured Articles, Reviews & ResourcesMarch 1st is coming! Are you ready? Why you say?
You try and try and try but can’t think of why
And you’re afraid that you might cry!
It’s okay, we are talking about Read Across America Day. The National Education Association created Read Across America as an annual event to help motivate children to read and to create awareness among all of us of the need for children to be able to read.
Normally held on March 2, Read Across America is taking place on Friday March 1st this year. This allows for schools, teachers and PTO programs to organize events to take place during the school day. The date of March 2nd was chosen as a way to honor Dr. Seuss, who was born on March 2nd. Dr. Seuss is perhaps the most popular author of children’s books-ever! I think everyone can agree that a day to celebrate reading and to remember and honor Dr. Seuss is a great idea!
The first Read Across America day was March 2, 1998. This special day has become our nation’s biggest celebration of reading. For this year’s event the NEA has chosen the theme of “Grab your hat and read with the Cat”
So what are you waiting for? It’s time to start planning! It’s time to start reading!
