Yertle the Turtle
Feb 28th, 2013 | By Wendy | Category: Craft Time, Family Time, Featured Articles, Reviews & ResourcesAs only he can, Dr. Seuss entertains us and teaches us all at the same time. This book is better suited for school age children who will easily understand the simple and clear message of respecting others. By the time children are in school, chances are they have already encountered someone trying to be boss of the playground; just as Yertle has declared himself boss of the pond. Even though the book was written more than 50 years ago, the message of anti-bullying is as current today was it was then. Reading this book with your child opens the door for conversations on the importance of respecting others and how to handle the bossy people in your life.
Family Time Activity
Make a Paper Plate Turtle
What you will need
White paper plate (any size)
Green paint or markers
Brown construction paper
Glue
Wiggle eyes (optional)
Brad fastener (optional)
Take a white paper plate, turn it upside down and paint or color the entire plate green. While the paint is drying, using brown construction paper, cut out: 4 feet, a tail and a head. After the plate has dried, glue on the four feet and tail. Before attaching the head glue on (or draw) wiggle eyes. The head may be glued on also or if you attach the head using a brad, you will be able to turn the head to make it look like it’s gone into its shell.
