Read Across America Day 2012
Feb 16th, 2012 | By Wendy | Category: Family Time, Featured ArticlesRead Across America Day is coming! Be a part of the reading fun. The celebration is March 2nd. The National Education Association’s Read Across America is in its 13th year. Why March 2nd? It’s in honor of the birthday of Dr. Seuss!
Plan your own Read Across America celebration! Personalize your event by having the whole family join in and cook a special meal together. The Green Eggs and Ham Cookbook is a great place to start. The cookbook is as colorful and fun as a Dr. Seuss story. Each entry, whether a drink, main course or dessert, is based on a character or book from Dr. Seuss. Your kids will love looking through it and helping you plan your Dr. Seuss inspired meal.
Are you hungry and ready to eat? Then get up on your feet! Head to the kitchen to make a treat! A sample dinner could include:
Pink Yink Ink Drink, Cat’s Mac & Cheese and Brown Bar-ba-loots’ Truffula Fruits!
And no Dr. Seuss meal is complete without the whimsical matching tableware.
There is no need for the festivities to end, no need to go to bed once you are fed! Let the fun continue by playing a game. You could make one up but it might be lame and then you will have only yourself to blame!
To play is not your thing you say? No need to keep the fun at bay, come this way and watch a movie but only if mother says you may!
It’s a fact that some kids prefer crafts! Grab some white paper and a red marker to make your own Cat in the Hat, hat. Another way to make a hat is to cut strips of white paper and glue them onto red paper.
Make a Cat In The Hat poster by decorating a piece of poster board with Cat In The Hat Stickers.
Colorful Fish Craft
Items needed:
Red, green, yellow and blue card stock or construction paper
Wiggle eyes
Glue
Instructions:
Cut out Fish shapes from paper
Glue on wiggle eyes
Lay out a blue sheet or a towel to create a pond. You can write numbers on the fish to make a matching game. You can also create a fishing game by attaching a piece of self-adhesive magnet to the fish. Build a fishing pole by tying a piece of string to a dowel rod and tie a paper clip to the other end of the string.
There’s no more time tonight to cook but look there is time for a book! Grab the book you took from the nook. Before you enter a deep deep sleep; keep your eyes open for one last peek.
It’s impossible to go to bed on this night without a story from a Dr. Seuss book; so many of us remember The Cat in the Hat as our first rhyming book. Each book by Dr. Seuss is memorable and one to cherish. It’s hard to come up with just one to call your favorite.
These unique toys will extend the fun well beyond Read Across America Day. What better way to introduce your young child to the wonder of Dr. Seuss than by playing? This is especially true for children who are reluctant to sit and listen to books. While you sit and play with the One Fish Fishbowl, start to read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. Your child can reap the benefits of a story just by hearing it; they don’t always have to look at the pictures.
If your kids are interested in dressing up for Read Across America, here are some fun things to choose from.
