One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss is a book filled with rhyming and make believe silly creatures, what’s not to love? As you read this book, let your imagination run wild and think about what life at your house would be if you had a pet like a Mike or you could play out back with your pet Gack? After reading this book pets like dogs, cats, and fish may seem too ordinary. You really will wish for an ish! This book provides an entertaining introduction to word family groupings. After reading the book a few times, your child will have many rhyming words memorized without it feeling like work.

Family Time Activity
Cut fish shapes out of red, green, yellow and blue paper. Cut multiple fish in each color. On the back of the red fish, write words in the ‘at’ family (bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, rat and sat) Using the green fish, write words in the ‘an’ family (ban, can, fan, man, ran, van) On the yellow fish, write words from the ‘in’ family (bin, fin, pin, tin, win) Lastly, on the blue fish, write words from the ‘ug’ family (bug, hug, mug, rug, tug)
Mix up all of the colors together and then lay all of the fish out on the floor with the word side down. First sort the fish by color, then turn over each color group one at a time and read the words. Talk to your child about rhyming words and that they can make new words by changing the beginning sound. This activity provides a fun family time activity to practice sorting skills as well as word family recognition.
